I was trying to find subscription info for the new magazine, but since the short stories were the only thing I'm interested in it looks like I might as well wait for the collected version.

Bobnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2529911059865628556.post-414695307993201682021-10-30T11:56:18.949-06:002021-10-30T11:56:18.949-06:00I just saw that Star Trek Explorer is going to fea...I just saw that Star Trek Explorer is going to feature short stories! The web browser that comes with the kindle is garbage and it ate my first attempt at posting so I had to quickly retype everything and I forgot to give a spoiler warning. Sorry about that.Bobhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17663980734898071684noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2529911059865628556.post-40922916305680520322021-10-27T14:42:33.454-06:002021-10-27T14:42:33.454-06:00A very exciting book. I'm not a fan of a lot of the things in the newer Trek books (Vedek Kira, Data 2.0, hardened spy Bashir, new DS9 etc) so it's doubly impressive that he has made such a tasty meal out of bad ingrediants.

Random thoughts:

- I loved Ro's last line to Kira: "I have all I need."

- I think Quark would have had a much stronger reaction to the death of Nog.

- Did we really need Spock in this story? Maybe he will be essential to part three.

- I liked the scene in which Jake convinces the guards to let the evacuees board the transport vehicles. I couldn't help but picture Tony Todd.

- I'm really not sure about Bashir's last line. The story already has too much ground to cover as it is, and I'm not sure that it needs to get any more complicated with the already overused Mirror Universe.

- It will fall on deaf ears but I'm going to repeat my complaint about authors unnecessarily referencing unrelated episodes and novels. It's pointless and interrupts the flow of the story. Being reminded of something pertinent to this story is one thing - just throwing in unrelated references to the time that character X met character Y is not.

- Minor complaint: Miles and Julian should have died together. You can't have that many episodes where they rehearse making a final stand in the holodeck just to have them killed off separately.

- Major flub alert: Nothing can destroy the Rio Grande. Nothing!

- I would love to see James Swallow pen some more DS9 novels. Day of the Vipers was very good.

- If I ever strike it rich I'm going to commission one of these guys to write a proper DS9 finale set just after Soul Key. Man, the relaunch was awesome up to that point.

- I hope that wasn't the last we'll see of Martok, Klag, and the IKS Gorkon. I wish K.R.A.D. had gotten one more shot at writing these characters. Bobnoreply@blogger.com
